VICTORIAN GORDON HIGHLANDERS SCOTTISH DIRK. DATED 1898 #10254

A late 19th century Victorian Scottish Highland dirk from the Gordon Highlanders, 30cm etched and polished blade with a scalloped back edge, the blade etched with thistles and foliage and the makers name ROBtMOLE & SONS MAKERS BIRMINGHAM,  and 98, the reverse side of the blade with a war department stamp B. 3. under a crown,single edged blade, the first 14cm double edged, the wooden hilt with basket weave pattern and struck with 47 silver pins, the top mount of iron with a Queens crown, the bottom mount of German silver engraved on one side 1 GOR D10, the reverse side with the date 11.98, wooden leather covered sheath with iron mounts decorated with thistles. The 1st Gordon Highlanders Division 10 also known as 1st battalion Gordon Highlander were an Infantry Regiment, formed in 1881.

This dirk was passed down through the generations and the soldier who purchased it in 1898 was with the battalion in South Africa for the battles there until 1902
