LATE 19TH CENTURY 79th REGIMENT OF FOOT. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS SKEAN DHU #9827

 A 19th century (circa 1880) regimental Scottish Skean Dhu for an officer of the 79th Regiment of foot, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 4 inch single edged blade the back of the blade with a scalloped edge and a single fuller either side and typical slight curve to the blade so as to sit snuggly against the leg, the gilt brass mounted horn hilt moulded with a lattice design inset with brass studs and one of the emblems of the the Cameron Highlanders, the Sphinx which was granted to them for their use after their success at the battle of The Nile in Egypt, the top mount set with a coloured stone, the wooden sheath covered with leather, decorated gilt brass mounts and stamped with the retailers stamp "WM. ANDERSON and SONS LTD. MILITARY OUTFITTERS. EDINBURGH & GLASGOW". Overall 7½ inches. #9827alo

In April 1805 the Sphinx was adopted by Regimental Order as the crest to be worn on their bonnets in place of a regimental button.
