Original folio plate of S.M.S FREGATTE "NOVARA"  (Sailing Frigate)in 1858 taken from the 2 Volume folio DER OSTERREISCHE ARMEE von 1700-1867. The plate illustrated by Rudolph von Ottenfeld 1856-1913 and signed R v Ottenfeld. The plate published by S. Czeiger,Wien in 1895 and marked Druck v S Czeiger,Wien. Size 16½ inches by 12½ inches. Some surface marks.#7780

SMS Novara was a sail frigate of the Austro-Hungarian Navy most noted for sailing the globe for the Novara Expedition of 1857–1859 and, later for carrying Archduke Maximilian and his wife Carlota to Veracruz  in May 1864 to become Emperor and Empress of Mexico.

Originally issued in 25 wrapped parts folio size, housed in 2 book folders with decorative front cover boards, containing 870 pages with 102 full page colour plates by Rudolph von Ottenfeld of soldiers in uniform, uniforms and weapons of the Austrian Army covering the period 1700 to 1867,  The work of Rudolph von Ottenfeld is considered to be the most accurate depiction and definitive study of the Austrian Armies of the 18th and 19th Centuries.
