BLACK WATCH. SCOTTISH HIGHLAND REGIMENT PIPERS DIRK #4451

A government issued Scottish pipers dirk to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Highlanders (Black Watch). The 12 inch scalloped back blade with various government inspectors stamps and manufacturing date of August 1904 and etched either side with thistles and foliage and etched with the makers name"ROBt MOLE & SONS. Manufacturers, Birmingham", ebony lattice style hilt set with silver pins and with a King's crown pommel in iron, the metal collar stamped with the government broad arrow and "38. 3RH 8/09". The wooden leather covered scabbard struck on the back with government inspectors stamps, 4 iron mounts decorated with thistles, the throat of the scabbard stamped "3RH 19. 36" the back of the top mount engraved 1/02. complete with the original leather belt holder. Overall 18 inches. #4451lfo.

The regiment was formed in 1881 as an amalgamation of 2 regiments and was known as The Black Watch. The Royal Highlanders until 1931

A marriage of 3 dates and possibly, due to being an issued dirk the reason for an earlier sheath, this dirk would no doubt have been taken on the 1st World War. The issue date of 1908 coincides with the formation of volunteers and militia into a Territorial Force or Special Reserve
