REGIMENTAL SKEAN DHU. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS CIRCA 1880 #9125

 A 19th century (circa 1880) regimental Scottish Skean Dhu for an officer of the CAMERON HIGHLANDERS, 4 inch single edged blade the back of the blade with a scalloped edge and a single fuller either side, the silver mounted horn hilt moulded with a lattice design inset with silver studs (losses) and one of the emblems of the the Cameron Highlanders, the Sphinx, which was granted to them for their use after their success at the battle of The Nile in Egypt, the top mount missing, the wooden sheath covered with leather, silver mounts and stamped with the retailers stamp "ANDERSON & SONS. GEORGE STREET. EDINBURGH". Slight gap between the top of the blade and hilt. Overall 7½ inches.   #9125amo

The Cameron Highland Regiment or 79th Regiment of Foot was formed in 1793 as an Infantry Regiment, they fought at the battle of the Nile and were then allowed to show the Sphinx superscribed Egypt on their battle honours, in 1873 after a parade on the Isle of Wight it was decided they should be called "Queens Own"
