RARE BALATO SWORD FROM NIAS ISLAND. INDONESIA #8950

A rare 19th century Balato sword from the southern part of the Indonesian island of Nias off of the western coast of Sumatra. Single edged 19 inch blade, the wooden hilt carved as an animals head and with a brass collar, the wooden scabbard bound with 9 brass bands, the round plaited rattan basket which is usually attached to the top of the scabbard and is sometimes decorated with large animal teeth and contains amulets which serve as magical objects is missing.
