TIPSTAFF

19thC. TIPSTAFF AND HOLSTER #8807

A 19th century metropolitan police style tipstaff of usual form with removable screw-off top, of brass and ebony, contained in the original rare leather sprung loaded holster with belt loop and button down flap, stamped with a crown and FIELDS'S PATENT on both, the belt loop also stamped with the owner's name C.E.WEBB.    #8807rao

This comes with a letter from the owner who appears to have been a crown agent in Africa where he seems to have used this tipstaff as a badge of office after the turn of the century and had probably been in his family for some time before. There was also contained in the top of the tipstaff a coil of paper with his initials and other details to distinguish him as the owner in case of loss, the public record office at Kew has an article on him in Africa in 1928 when he was made to take compulsory retirement.
