18th/19thC, HIMALAYAN PURSE. (BAGHU)  #8507

An 18th/19th century Himalayan Purse (Baghu) from Eastern Tibet the leather purse decorated on the front with repousse work in silver and gold and set with a turquoise cabochon in a gold coloured mount, the rear covered with silver studs, the bottom of the purse with a decorated brass metal band, section missing, with leather suspension strap with a decorated repousse mount set with a turquoise cabochon. 5 inches across.  #8507to.

Purses such as this would have been worn by extremely wealthy woman or aristocracy as a sign of their social standing and were used for carrying money, tobacco and other small items.
