GEORGIAN OR ELIZABETHAN POLICE TRUNCHEON

GEORGIAN OR ELIZABETHAN POLICE TRUNCHEON. #8072 #8072

a late Georgian or Elizabethan police truncheon, the grip turned to accommodate the fingers of the hand and with the original leather carrying strap stamped J HUDSON & Co, B'HAM. Overall 14¾ inches. Slight stress crack see photos

J Huson & Co were founded in 1880's and are famous as whistle manufacturers and still exist today as Acme Whistles.

Lignum vitae is hard and durable, and is also the densest wood traded. It was the traditional wood used for British police truncheon until recently, due to its density (and strength), combined with the relative softness of wood compared to metal, thereby tending to bruise or stun rather than simply cut the skin.
