FRENCH MODEL 1831 GLADIUS SWORD #10250

A nice example of a French Gladius' Model 1831 Foot Artillery Short Sword. Double edged 47.5cm blade with a central fuller either side, the blade stamped with the makers name, WEYERSBERG SÖHNE SOLINGEN, the cross-guard stamped R.ECK, this revised model replaced the original c.1816 French artillery sword and was used as an all-purpose weapon and tool around camp, as facsine cutters, and for hacking or chopping anything, hence the nickname they became known as "Coupe Choux" or "Cabbage Cutters". Still a nice short and heavy and deadly sword for fighting at close quarters. Overall 62cm. No scabbard

This pattern of gladius is named after its direct original version, the ancient Roman sword used by the Roman Empire for hundreds of years, the gladius was used by the French till the 1850's and the Crimean war against Russia, after the war many French gladius were sold in the early 1860's to the USA to supply arms for the Civil War, they copied the sword and made their own version with an Eagle decorated pommel by their foot soldiers
