19th CENTURY BORNEO DYAK MANDAU HEAD HUNTERS SWORD #10204
A late 19th century DYAK MANDAU head hunters sword from the Indonesian part of Borneo, 49cm hand forged, hand beaten, single edged iron blade with curved cross section and with brass inserts along the top edge of one side of the blade, the "L" shaped hilt of carved animal bone, the wooden grip, blackened, and bound with braided rattan. In the original carved wooden sheath, bound with rattan, also with the horn handled wooden whittling knife "Piso Raout", the iron single edged blade, rusty, contained in a leather pouch attached to the back of the sheath with attached braided rattan strap to which is attached a piece of carved horn, the bottom of the sheath with various beads and hair. 66cm. #10204eo

Provenance: Acquired by a Danish civil engineer who worked on bridge construction in the then Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) in the early 1900s. Inherited in the family to this day.
